This research sought to assess the effects of dietary supplements with Gracilaria lichenoides and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, either individually or combined, on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal function of Penaeus monodon. A total of 840 shrimps were randomly assigned to 28 tanks with an average initial weight of (1.04 ± 0.03) g (30 shrimp per tank) with 7 different treatment groups and 4 replicates per treatment. The control treatment (C) consisted of a basal diet; in contrast, the experimental groups were complement with varying levels of G. lichenoides (3% or 8%), either alone (S3 and S8) or in combination with B.amyloliquefaciens at different concentrations (3% G. lichenoides and 109 CFU/g-S3B9; 8% G. lichenoides and 1011 CFU/g B. amyloliquefaciens-S8B11; 109 CFU/g B. amyloliquefaciens-S9; 1011 CFU/g B. amyloliquefaciens-B11). The results indicated that the maximum values of final body weight (FBW) (10.49 ± 0.90) g, weight gain rate (WGR) (908.94 ± 33.58) g, and specific growth rate (SGR) (4.20 ± 0.06) g were perceived in the 3% G. lichenoide diet treatment, and compared with the control group, the difference was significant (p < 0.05). The whole-body lipid content of shrimp in the B9 group was significantly higher than that in the B11 group (p < 0.05), but no significant difference was observed when compared with shrimp fed other diets (p > 0.05). The ash content of shrimp in the B9 group was found to be significantly higher than that in the S3B9 group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the lipase activity in the stomach and intestines of the experimental groups exhibited a statistically significantly increase compared to the control (p < 0.05). In comparison to the control group, the hepatopancreas of the S3 group exhibited a significant increase in the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and antioxidant genes [SOD, catalase (CAT), GSH-Px, thioredoxin (Trx), Hippo, and NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)] expression levels (p < 0.05). Additionally, the activities of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), SOD, peroxidase (POD), and antioxidant genes (CAT, GSH-Px, Trx, and Hippo) in the S3B9 treatment of hepatopancreas showed significant improvement (p < 0.05). The inclusion of dietary G. lichenoides and B. amyloliquefaciens resulted in enhanced relative expression of intestinal lipid metabolism genes (fatty acid synthetase (FAS), lipophorin receptor (LR), fatty acid transport protein 1 (FATP1)) and suppressed the expression of the long-chain fatty acid-CoA ligase 4 (LCL4) gene. Analysis of microbiota sequencing indicated improvements in composition and structure, with notable increases in Firmicutes at the phylum level and Vibrio at the genus level in the S3 group, as well as an increase in Tenericutes at the genus level in the S8B11 group. Overall, the inclusion of dietary G. lichenoides and B. amyloliquefaciens positively impacted the growth, antioxidant capacity, and microbial composition of shrimp, with particular enhancement observed in shrimp fed a supplementary 3% G. lichenoides diet.

OBJECTIVES: The Talos stent-graft has extended length to improve aortic remodeling, and distal porous design to decrease the rate of spinal cord ischemia. This study retrospectively analyzed its mid-term outcomes for uncomplicated type B aortic dissection in a multicenter study. METHODS: The primary safety endpoint was 30-day major adverse events, including all-cause mortality, dissection-related mortality, conversion to open surgery, and device-related adverse events. The primary efficacy endpoint was treatment success at 12 months post-operation, defined as no technical failure or secondary dissection-related reintervention. The survival status of the patients was visualized using the Kaplan-Meier curve. Aortic growth was assessed at four levels, and spinal cord ischemia was evaluated at 12 months. RESULTS: 113 patients participated with a mean age of 54.4 (11.1) years and 71.7% (81/113) were male. The 30-day mortality was 0.9% (1/113), no conversions to open surgery or device-related adverse events were recorded. The 12-month treatment success rate was 99.1% (112/113), with no dissection-related reinterventions. There was no spinal cord or visceral ischemia at 12 months. At a median of 34 months follow-up, 9 further deaths were recorded and the 3-year survival rate was 91.7%. The percentage of aortic growth was 1.8% (2/111) at the tracheal bifurcation, 3.6% (4/111) below the left atrium, 6.0% (5/83) above the celiac artery, and 12.1% (9/74) below the lower renal artery. The total thrombosis rate of the false lumen at the stented segment was 80.5% (91/113). CONCLUSIONS: The results showed satisfactory results of Talos stent-graft in terms of safety and efficacy. More data are needed to confirm the long-term performance.

Employing an automated monitoring system (AMS) for data acquisition offers benefits, such as reducing the workload, in the kinetic study of suspended photocatalytic batch reactions. However, the current methods in this field tend to narrowly focus on the substrate and often overlook the optical characteristics of both the mixture and solid particles. To address this limitation, in this study, we propose a novel AMS based on online circulatory spectrophotometry (OCS) and incorporate debubbling, aeration, and segmented flow (DAS), named DAS-OCS-AMS. Initially, a debubbler is introduced to mitigate the issue of signal noise caused by bubbles (SNB). Subsequently, an aerated and segmented device is developed to address the issue of particle deposition on the inner wall of the pipeline (PDP) and on the windows of the flow cell (PDW). The proposed DAS-OCS-AMS is applied to monitor the kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation of Acid Orange Ⅱ by TiO2 (P25), and its results are compared with those obtained using the traditional OCS-AMS. The comparative analysis indicates that the proposed DAS-OCS-AMS effectively mitigates the influence of SNB, PDP, and PDW, yielding precise results both for the mixture and solid particles. The DAS-OCS-AMS provides a highly flexible universal framework for online circulatory automated monitoring and a robust hardware foundation for subsequent data processing research.

The signaling environment, or niche, often governs the initial difference in behavior of an adult stem cell and a derivative that initiates a path towards differentiation. The transition between an instructive stem cell niche and differentiation niche must generally have single-cell resolution, suggesting that multiple mechanisms might be necessary to sharpen the transition. Here, we examined the Drosophila ovary and found that Cap cells, which are key constituents of the germline stem cell (GSC) niche, express a conserved microRNA (miR-124). Surprisingly, loss of miR-124 activity in Cap cells leads to a defect in differentiation of GSC derivatives. We present evidence that the direct functional target of miR-124 in Cap cells is the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and that failure to limit EGFR expression leads to the ectopic expression of a key anti-differentiation BMP signal in neighboring somatic escort cells (ECs), which constitute a differentiation niche. We further found that Notch signaling connects EFGR activity in Cap cells to BMP expression in ECs. We deduce that the stem cell niche communicates with the differentiation niche through a mechanism that begins with the selective expression of a specific microRNA and culminates in the suppression of the major anti-differentiation signal in neighboring cells, with the functionally important overall role of sharpening the spatial distinction between self-renewal and differentiation environments.

Perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens (PCAS) is a refractory and recrudescent chronic inflammatory dermatosis of the scalp, which seriously affects the appearance and quality of life of patients. The treatment of PCAS is challenging, often leading to frustrating outcome. In this paper, we report a case of PCAS who received 20 % 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) combined with carbon dioxide (CO2) laser pretreatment. The skin lesions of this case showed complete clearance after 2 month, and there was no recurrence after 1 year of follow-up. To our knowledge, we presented the first successful regimen of ALA-PDT combined with CO2 laser therapy for PCAS.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of diabetic encephalopathy (DE), a significant diabetes-related pathological complication of the central nervous system, is poorly understood. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent regulated necrotic cell death process that mediates the development of neurodegenerative and diabetes-related lesions. Quercetin (QE) exerts anti-ferroptotic effects in various diseases. However, the roles of ferroptosis in DE and the potential anti-ferroptotic mechanisms of QE are unclear. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate if quercetin can ameliorate DE by inhibiting ferroptosis and to elucidate the potential anti-ferroptotic mechanisms of QE, thus providing a new perspective on the pathogenesis and prevention of DE. METHODS: The spontaneously type 2 diabetic Goto-Kakizak rats and high glucose (HG)-induced PC12 cells were used as animal and in vitro models, respectively. The Morris water maze test was performed to evaluate the cognition of rats. Pathological damage was examined using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Mitochondrial damage was assessed using transmission electron microscopy. Lipid peroxidation was evaluated by examining the levels of malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione. Additionally, the contents of iron ions were quantified. Immunofluorescence and western blotting were carried out to poke the protein levels. Network pharmacology analysis was conducted to construct a protein-protein interaction network for the therapeutic targets of QE in DE. Additionally, molecular docking and cellular thermal shift assay was performed to examine the target of QE. RESULTS: QE alleviated cognitive impairment, decreased lipid peroxidation and iron deposition in the hippocampus, and upregulated the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. HG-induced ferroptosis in PC12 cells resulted in decreased cell viability accompanied by lipid peroxidation and iron deposition. QE mitigated HG-induced ferroptosis by upregulating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, which was partially suppressed upon Nrf2 inhibition. Network pharmacology analysis further indicated that the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway is a key target of QE. Molecular docking experiments revealed that QE binds to KEAP1 through four hydrogen bonds. Moreover, QE altered the thermostability of KEAP1. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that QE inhibits ferroptosis in the hippocampal neurons by binding to KEAP1 and subsequently upregulating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.

Nitrite and microplastics (MPs) are environmental pollutants that threaten intestinal integrity and affect immune function of shrimp. In this study, the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were exposed to the individual and combined stress of nitrite and microplastics for 14 days, and the changes of intestinal histology and physiological functions were investigated. After single and combined stress, affectations occurred in intestinal tissue; the antioxidant enzyme activities (MDA, H2O2, CAT increased) and gene expression levels (CAT, SOD, GPx, HSP70 up-regulated) changed. The expression levels of detoxification genes (CYP450, UGT down-regulated, GST up-regulated), apoptosis genes (CASP-3 up-regulated) and endoplasmic reticulum stress genes (Bip, GRP94 down-regulated) changed. Furthermore, the stress also increased intestinal microbial diversity, causing bacterial composition variation, especially beneficial bacteria and pathogenic bacteria. These results suggested that nitrite and microplastics stress had adverse effects on the intestinal health of L. vannamei by affecting intestinal tissue morphology, immune response and microbial community.

Litopenaeus vannamei stands out globally in aquaculture for its fast growth, broad salt tolerance, disease resistance, and high protein levels. Selective breeding requires the precise estimation of the variance components and genetic parameters for important traits. This study formed lineages from 20 full sibling families of L. vannamei, with progenitors from Thailand and the USA. We then assessed the genetic resilience traits of juvenile shrimp from these families to high ammonia-N, high pH, and low salinity by performing a 96 h acute toxicity test. Mortality rates for the families under 96 h exposure to high ammonia-N, high pH, and low salinity were 19.52-92.22%, 23.33-92.22%, and 19.33-80.00%, respectively, showing significant variance in stress tolerance among families (p < 0.05). Survival heritability estimates, using threshold male and female models, were 0.44 ± 0.12 in high ammonia-N, 0.41 ± 0.12 in high pH, and 0.27 ± 0.08 in low salinity, respectively. Genetic correlations between growth and stress resistance traits varied from 0.0137 ± 0.2406 to 0.8327 ± 0.0781, and phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.0019 ± 0.0590 to 0.6959 ± 0.0107, indicating a low-to-high positive correlation significant at (p < 0.05). It was found that the survival rate of families No. 2 and No. 9 was higher under high ammonia-N and high pH stresses, while the survival rate of family No. 10 was higher under low salinity stress after comparing two selection criteria, the breeding values and phenotypic values. Thus, these three families are identified as potential breeding program candidates. Through the creation of a genetic parameter estimation model, the genetic variances across mating combinations for stress resistance traits were obtained and families with heightened stress resistance were identified, laying the groundwork for enhanced genetic selection of L. vannamei.

BACKGROUND: Striae distensae (SD) is a challenging cosmetic condition. Ablative fractional laser (AFL) is an effective method for treating SD. Recently, fractional radiofrequency (FRF) has been shown to be a promising treatment for SD; however, few studies have shown the differences between FRF and AFL in the treatment of SD. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy and safety of bipolar FRF with 2940-nm erbium yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) AFL in the treatment of SD. PATIENTS/METHODS: Twenty volunteers with abdominal SD were enrolled in this study. One half of the abdomen was treated with 2940-nm Er:YAG AFL, whereas the other half was treated with bipolar FRF, with three sessions at 4-week intervals. Photographic evaluations of clinical improvement were conducted by two independent investigators before and after treatment, and the patients provided self-assessments. Two participants underwent three punch biopsies, one before treatment and two obtained from bilateral representative skin lesions on the abdomen 3 months following the final treatment. RESULTS: Clinical improvements were observed in SD on both sides of the abdomen after the two treatments. Post-treatment skin biopsies revealed increased thickness in the epidermis and dermis, and higher collagen and elastin density compared to those at the baseline. No statistically significant differences were observed in the clinical outcomes between the two treatment approaches. CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy and safety of bipolar FRF treatment are comparable to those of 2940-nm Er:YAG AFL treatment, providing an alternative and effective treatment for SD.

Intestinal microbiota can coevolve with host to form symbiotic relationship and be participated in the regulation of host physiological function. At present, there is no clear explanation on the effect of intestinal microflora in Jiangxi aboriginal chickens. Here, we investigated the association between gut microbiota and host genome of Jiangxi local chickens using 16S rRNA sequencing and genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The results showed that the breeds and genders had important effects on the intestinal microbiota of chickens. A total of 28 SNPs in 14 regions of the chicken genome were related to the relative abundance of microorganisms in 5 genera: Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Enterococcus, Gallibacterium, Turicibacter, and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group. A total of 17 candidate genes were identified composition of chicken microbiome and show an association between the host genome and the chicken intestinal microbiota, which also unveiled the diversity of intestinal microbes in Jiangxi chickens. Given the correlation between chicken genome and intestinal microbe found in the present study, a new idea for the protection of aboriginal chicken genetic resources in China could be provided.

RESUMO

We reported two cases of full-face 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) for facial multiple actinic keratosis (AK). After the full-face ALA-PDT, we observed that the AK lesions on the faces of the patients were completely cleared and facial rejuvenation was achieved. In our follow-up, one patient was free of recurrence for over 13 months and the other one for over 28 months. The experience of these two cases may indicate that full-face ALA-PDT has an excellent therapeutic effect while potentially preventing the recurrence of AK.

Efficient and rapid synthesis of transition metal-based hydroxides with tailored microstructures has emerged as a promising approach to fabricate high-performance electrode materials for energy storage devices. However, many conventional synthesis methods are cumbersome, expensive and time-consuming, and the microstructures of electrode materials are usually uncontrollable. Herein, we propose a fast and cost-effective approach to electrochemically in situ grow NiFeCo-based ternary hydroxides (NiFeCo-THs) with layered nanosheet structures on pretreated nickel foam (NF). The in situ grown NiFeCo-THs were in direct contact with the NF to form a monolithic electrode as NiFeCo/NF. By engineering the ion exchange process for controlling the ionic ratio, the monolithic Ni1(Fe/Co = 1/1)0.5/NF electrode was fabricated and found to show the optimum electrochemical behavior with a specific capacitance of 2.32 C cm-2 at 2 mA cm-2 as a result of its characteristic microstructures. Furthermore, a hybrid supercapacitor was constructed utilizing the monolithic Ni1(Fe/Co = 1/1)0.5/NF electrode and activated carbon as the cathode and anode, respectively, and it was found to have an energy density of 81.1 µW h cm-2 at a power density of 808.8 µW cm-2. After 5000 cycles, 84.0% of the initial capacitance of the hybrid supercapacitor was maintained, and the monolithic Ni1(Fe/Co = 1/1)0.5/NF electrode still retained the arrayed nanosheet structure.

Parasitoids introduce various virulence factors when parasitism occurs, and some taxa generate teratocytes to manipulate the host immune system and metabolic homeostasis for the survival and development of their progeny. Host-parasitoid interactions are extremely diverse and complex, yet the evolutionary dynamics are still poorly understood. A category of serpin genes, named CvT-serpins, was discovered to be specifically expressed and secreted by the teratocytes of Cotesia vestalis, an endoparasitoid of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella. Genomic and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the C. vestalis serpin genes are duplicated and most of them are clustered into 1 monophyletic clade. Intense positive selection was detected at the residues around the P1-P1' cleavage sites of the Cv-serpin reactive center loop domain. Functional analyses revealed that, in addition to the conserved function of melanization inhibition (CvT-serpins 1, 16, 18, and 21), CvT-serpins exhibited novel functions, i.e. bacteriostasis (CvT-serpins 3 and 5) and nutrient metabolism regulation (CvT-serpins 8 and 10). When the host-parasitoid system is challenged with foreign bacteria, CvT-serpins act as an immune regulator to reprogram the host immune system through sustained inhibition of host melanization while simultaneously functioning as immune effectors to compensate for this suppression. In addition, we provided evidence that CvT-serpin8 and 10 participate in the regulation of host trehalose and lipid levels by affecting genes involved in these metabolic pathways. These findings illustrate an exquisite tactic by which parasitoids win out in the parasite-host evolutionary arms race by manipulating host immune and nutrition homeostasis via adaptive gene evolution and neofunctionalization.

BACKGROUNDS: Skin wounds are a kind of refractory disease frequently encountered in clinic, which brings enormous burden to patients. Great efforts to address the dilemma of wound healing have yielded some encouraging results, but they are still unsatisfactory. 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been developed as a promising noninvasive treatment for skin wounds. A systematic review was performed to determine the existing evidence base for the clinical use of ALA-PDT on refractory wounds. METHODS: We conducted a PubMed search for English literature related to the clinical treatment of human skin ulcers by ALA-PDT published from 2012 to 2022, and performed a systematic review. RESULTS: 25 studies were ultimately selected in the present review and summarized, including six studies of skin cancer, five studies of chronic leg ulcers, three studies of erosive pustular skin diseases, and two studies of erosive oral lichen planus symptoms. A total of 335 patients had approximately 355 ulcers, of which 315 ulcers received photodynamic therapy and 276 improved with ALA-PDT. 20% ALA solution, wavelength between 600 nm and 670 nm, energy density of 120 J/cm2, frequency of once per week and 3 sessions were the most selected therapeutic parameters. Generally, ALA-PDT for wounds was effective with main adverse events of mild to moderate pain, and follow-up was generally conducted within 1 year. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review summarized the commonly used therapeutic parameters for ALA-PDT in the clinical treatment of skin wounds. After ALA-PDT alone or ALA-PDT combined with curettage, antibacterial and surgical treatment, all wounds healed well, and the adverse reactions were mainly mild to moderate pain, which could be relieved by cooling. ALA-PDT had proven to be a promising wound treatment modality through evidence of safety and efficacy.

As the intensive development of aquaculture persists, the demand for fishmeal continues to grow; however, since fishery resources are limited, the price of fishmeal remains high. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new sources of protein. They are rich in proteins, fatty acids, amino acids, chitin, vitamins, minerals, and antibacterial substances. Maggot meal-based diet is an ideal source of high-quality animal protein and a new type of protein-based immune enhancer with good application prospects in animal husbandry and aquaculture. In the present study, we investigated the effects of three different diets containing maggot protein on the growth and intestinal microflora of Litopenaeus vannamei. The shrimp were fed either a control feed (no fly maggot protein added), FM feed (compound feed with 30% fresh fly maggot protein added), FF feed (fermented fly maggot protein), or HT feed (high-temperature pelleted fly maggot protein) for eight weeks. The results showed that fresh fly maggot protein in the feed was detrimental to shrimp growth, whereas fermented and high-temperature-pelleted fly maggot protein improved shrimp growth and survival. The effects of different fly maggot protein treatments on the intestinal microbiota of L. vannamei also varied. Fermented fly maggot protein feed and high-temperature-pelleted fly maggot protein feed increased the relative abundance of Ruegeria and Pseudomonas, which increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria and thus inhibited the growth of harmful bacteria. In contrast, fresh fly maggot proteins alter the intestinal microbiome, disrupting symbiotic relationships between bacteria, and causing invasion by Vibrio and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These results suggest that fresh fly maggot proteins affect the composition of intestinal microorganisms, which is detrimental to the intestinal tract of L. vannamei, whereas fermented fly maggot protein feed affected the growth of L. vannamei positively by improving the composition of intestinal microorganisms.

Plants deploy intracellular receptors to counteract pathogen effectors that suppress cell-surface-receptor-mediated immunity. To what extent pathogens manipulate intracellular receptor-mediated immunity, and how plants tackle such manipulation, remains unknown. Arabidopsis thaliana encodes three similar ADR1 class helper nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat receptors (ADR1, ADR1-L1, and ADR1-L2), which are crucial in plant immunity initiated by intracellular receptors. Here, we report that Pseudomonas syringae effector AvrPtoB suppresses ADR1-L1- and ADR1-L2-mediated cell death. ADR1, however, evades such suppression by diversifying into two ubiquitination sites targeted by AvrPtoB. The intracellular sensor SNC1 interacts with and guards the CCR domains of ADR1-L1/L2. Removal of ADR1-L1/L2 or delivery of AvrPtoB activates SNC1, which then signals through ADR1 to trigger immunity. Our work elucidates the long-sought-after function of SNC1 in defense, and also how plants can use dual strategies, sequence diversification, and a multi-layered guard-guardee system, to counteract pathogen's attack on core immunity functions.

Triclocarban (TCC) is a widely used broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that has become a pollutant threatening the health of aquatic animals. However, the toxic effects of TCC on Penaeus monodon are still lacking. In this study, we exposed P. monodon to 1 µg/L (TCC-1) and 10 µg/L TCC (TCC-10) for 14 days, and the changes of histological morphology, physiological and immune responses in the gills were investigated. The results showed that TCC exposure caused the deformation of the gill vessels and the disordered arrangement of the gill filaments. Oxidative stress biochemical indexes such as H2O2 content, CAT and GPx activity and the relative expression levels of antioxidant-related genes (SOD, GPx and Nrf2) were increased in the TCC-1 and TCC-10 groups; the levels of CAT and HSP70 genes were increased but POD activity was decreased in the TCC-10 group. The relative expression levels of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress indexes such as ERP15 and ATF-6 genes were increased in the TCC-10 group, while the level of GRP78 gene was decreased in the TCC-1 and TCC-10 groups. The relative expression levels of apoptosis indexes such as p53 and JNK genes were increased, but CytC and Casp-3 genes were decreased in the TCC-1 and TCC-10 groups. Furthermore, the relative expression levels of detoxification metabolism-related genes (cytP450 and GST) and osmotic regulation-related genes (NKA-α, NKA-ß, CA, AQP, CLC and CCP) were increased in the TCC-10 group. The results showed that TCC exposure could affect the physiological homeostasis in the gills of P. monodon, probably via damaging histological morphology, inducing oxidative stress, and disordering ER stress, apoptosis, detoxification and osmotic regulation.

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterised by sterile, relapsing pustules on erythematous, scaly backgrounds on the palms and soles. PPP impairs quality of life and is notoriously challenging to manage. Here, we presented the case of a 79-year-old male who suffered from recalcitrant PPP for 9 years and responded not well to halometasone, acitretin capsules and oral Chinese traditional medicine. The patient showed improvement with a great reduction of erythema, scales, pustules after 5 sessions of 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT), suggesting that ALA-PDT could be a potentially safe and effective therapeutic option for PPP.

Background Basal, reflex, and emotional tears differ in chemical components. It is not yet known whether chemical differences exist in tears of different emotions. We investigated the biochemical basis of emotional tears by performing non-targeted metabolomics analyses of positive and negative emotional tears of humans. Methods Samples of reflex, negative, and positive emotional tears were obtained from 12 healthy college participants (11 females and one male). Untargeted metabolomics was performed to identify metabolites in different types of tears. The differentially altered metabolites were screened and assessed using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results The orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis model showed that reflex, negative, and positive emotional tears were clearly separated. A total of 133 significantly differentially expressed metabolites of electrospray ionization source (ESI-) mode were identified between negative and positive emotional tears. The top 50 differentially expressed metabolites between negative and positive emotional tears were highly correlated. Pathway analysis revealed that secretion of negative emotional tears was associated with some synapses in the brain, regulation of a series of endocrine hormones, including the estrogen signaling pathway, and inflammation activities, while secretion of positive emotional tears was correlated with biotin and caffeine metabolism. Conclusions It is indicated that metabolic profiles of reflex, positive, and negative emotional tears of humans are distinct, and secretion of the tears involves distinct biological activities. Therefore, we present a chemical method for detecting human emotions, which may become a powerful tool for the diagnosis of mental diseases and the identification of fake tears.

Currently, most of the disclosed ternary strategies to improve photovoltaic performance of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) commonly focus on the guest polymers having similar structures with the host polymer donors or acceptors. Herein, this work develops a distinctive ternary method that adding an amorphous B←N embedded polymer named BN-Cl-2fT to a crystallized host polymer blend of PM6 (a commercialized polymer donor) and PY-TT (a copolymer of Y6 and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene). Although the structures between BN-Cl-2fT and PM6 and PY-TT are completely different, excellent miscibility is found between BN-Cl-2fT and both of the host PM6 and PY-TT, which can be interpreted by the crowded phenyl groups anchoring along the backbone of BN-Cl-2fT, leading to weak self-aggregation. Glazing incidence wide-angle X-ray diffraction (GIWAXS) measurements explicitly confirm the crystallization of PM6 and PY-TT and amorphous feature of BN-Cl-2fT. Furthermore, adding 10 wt% BN-Cl-2fT to PM6:PY-TT can significantly enhance the crystallization of the host polymers. Thus the ternary devices based on PM6:PY-TT:BN-Cl-2fT afford promote short-circuit current density (JSC , 23.29 vs. 21.80 mA cm-2 ), fill factor (FF, 62.4% vs. 60.0%), and power conversion efficiency (PCE, 13.70% vs. 12.23%) in contrast to these parameters of binary devices based on PM6:PY-TT. This work provides a unique and enlightening avenue to design high performance all-PSCs by adding amorphous B←N embedded polymers as guest component to enhance host-crystallization.
